Work Experience

Welcome

Welcome to WEX12A, a 4-credit course where the community is your classroom. You will meet with your teacher at various times during the year to prepare and plan for work experience. Before you can work experience hours, you need to submit some paperwork and complete the Worksafe training.
To earn 4 credits you must complete 100 hours of work experience. Meetings and training constitute 10 to 20 hours in total. You can start this course in the summer before Grade 11, but must complete all the requirements in your Grade 12 year (or before)

Work Experience

Work Experience:

1 – See your teacher EARLY to get placements (September for winter placements, November for March Break!)

2 – Each placement needs an agreement signed, so you are covered by WorkSafeBC insurance

3 – Get your absences approved by your teachers [Absence Form]

4 – Contact the Employer for an interview [Planning Sheet]

5 – Complete your hours (you need 100 for 4 credits, 50 for 2 credits

6 – Get an evaluation from your employer

7 – Evaluate the worksite and what you learned

8 – Write a ‘Thank You’ letter to your employer / supervisor (this is good form!) [Sample]

Note:
You can use your job, but only if you are learning something new and complete the relevant Training Plan [PDF][Word]
You also need to document your experience like any other placement. Payslips on their own are not sufficient!

Grading

Marks:

How marks are calculated:

Grade 11 – you only receive comments and an ‘in progress’ code, no mark.

Grade 12 – Marks are based on:
15% Resume, forms and Worksafe
70% Work hours and employer evaluation
15% Work journal, self evaluation and updated resume

Japan Exchange

JAPAN EXCHANGE

2016

– Bihoku (Our Japanese Exchange school) came to Vancouver just prior to March Break 2016 and was hosted by participating students.

– Bihoku students attended classes at Eric Hamber and Kitsilano for two days.

– There were some joint activities for Japanese and Canadian students as part of the exchange

Hosting:

– If you are interested in hosting a Japanese student, you can earn credit towards the cost of your exchange trip

HOSTING INFO
JAPAN EXCHANGE – Hosting Information

The Basics:
– Participants SHOULD host their exchange partners
– German Partners come May 10-24 of same year as the trip to Germany.

– Japanese Partners come in alternate years (the year before or after the trip to Japan.

– If hosting is not possible, we will try to find an alternate host.

– As the person NOT hosting, you will have to financially compensate the family hosting your exchange partner.

– To secure that students host on our end we take a ‘hosting deposit’ which is returned after the guest has been hosted.

Interested in Hosting?
– If you host a German or Japanese student, you can earn credit towards the cost of the next exchange trip
– If you are going on one trip, you could also host for the other trip, you can also earn the extra credit.

– If you are NOT participating in a trip, the school will pay you a hosting fee.

– The amount of credit or payment depends on the length of stay, and what is expected of you, the host.

– There is no guarantee that we will need additional hosts in any year. It all depends on the number of participants and how many people can or cannot host.

Hosting Details
– Guests should have their own bedroom (You might have to sleep on the couch).
– Meals should be provided as per the schedule. Count on providing daily Breakfast, and most Lunches and Dinners.

– Students should be taken to school by their host partner, until they are comfortable with transit.

– On weekends, host familied should plan an activity with the student they are hosting.

2017

– A 12 Day trip to Japan during March Break 2017

– Joint Trip with Eric Hamber Secondary School

– Travel to Nagasaki, Kyoto, Osaka

– Hosted by a Japanese family in Inuyama (Close to Nagoya) for 4 days

– Joint Activities with Japanses Students and Host Families

– Bihoku (the Japanese school) will come to Vancouver the following March (2018) and be hosted by participating students.

– Expected cost $3300, including all transport and most meals.

– Students buy own snacks and drinks, and should count on about $100 in spending money

– We travel with public transportation as much as possible.

– Size of the group has been between 12 and 20 students.

– Chaperones are Ms.Hashigasako from Eric Hamber Secondary and Mr.Mehl from Kits

Notes:

– Focus of the trip was fine-tuned to match the interests of participants.

– Knowledge of Japanese is NOT a requirement.

– Mr. Mehl has been taking students to Japan for 10 years and has extensive experience organizing such trips, and as he lived in Japan for a few years, he is very familiar with the destinations.

SIGN UP

– We have started taking names with Course Registration in Spring of 2016.

– There will be a Parent Information Session mid September, with an initial deposit due in early October. First deposits will secure spaces.

3 Month Exchange

– Japanese students come to Kits or Hamber from January until March, as their school year starts April 1st.

COURSE CREDIT:

COURSE CREDIT
Under the umbrella of “Independent Directed Study” it is possible to earn course credit for this Exchange Program.

As we hold orientation sessions before our exchanges, and want to make sure students have a focus for their journey, students are able to earn up to 4 Grade 11 or Grade 12 Credits in Social Studies.

Germany Exchange

The Next Trip:

– 15 Day trip to Germany during March Break of 2018

– Hosted by German family in Ingolstadt, home of Audi, about half way between Munich and Nurnberg

– The German school will come to Vancouver May 10-24 of same year and be hosted by participating students.

– Participants should host their exchange partner, but if this is not possible, we will try to find an alternate host.

– See below for hosting information

– Trip cost will be around $2800, including all transport, Breakfasts and Dinners.

– Students will buy own lunches, and should count on about $150 in spending money

– We will be travelling with public transportation as much as possible.

– Size of the group will be a maximum of 16 students.

– Chaperones will be Mr.Mehl and another Female Staff member

Activities will include:

– 2-3 days at partner school

– Various sites in and around Ingolstadt, including Audi factory tour.

– Day / Overnight trips to Munich and Nurnberg, with emphasis on History and Culture.

– 4 Days at the end of the trip in Berlin.

– Activities co-ordinated by the school with German students in Canada in May (Weekends)

Notes:

– Focus of the trip will be fine-tuned to match the interests of participants.

– Knowledge of German in NOT a requirement.

– Our first exchange was a great success. Students from both schools had a great time both travelling and hosting. We look forward to many more exchanges with Reuchlin Gymnasium.
